Susan Boyle Discloses She Has Asperger's Syndrome

Susan Boyle Discloses She Has Asperger's Syndrome

Susan Boyle, who became a singing sensation in 2009, announced that she was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome. The diagnosis came after years of being told she had “brain damage.” During her school years she was also diagnosed with learning disabilities and nicknamed by her classmates as “Simple Susie.” She was bullied during her school years. According to biography.com, “she graduated with few academic qualifications.” [1] About a year ago, she went to see a specialist and found out her IQ was above average and that she has Asperger’s syndrome.

Throughout her life, Susan looked to music for comfort and enjoyment. Both her parents were musical - her father sang and her mother sang and played the piano. Growing up in a small town, however, Susan didn’t have many opportunities to nurture her musical talent. She did perform in school performances from the age of 12. Her parents and her teachers encouraged her to perform.

As an adult, Susan auditioned for talent show, sang at church and at local karaoke nights in the local pub. Susan sang because she loved to sing and dreamt of being a famous singer. Between 1997 and 2007, she went through a number of personal tragedies. In 1997, her father passed away and Susan took over the care of her mother. In 2000, her sister died and in 2007 her mother died. Susan took these deaths hard. After her father and sister passed away, she used music as a source of comfort but after her mother passed away she stopped singing for almost two years.

It was her mother, however, that had always encouraged and supported Susan’s singing. Together they would watch “Britain’s Got Talent” and her mother encouraged her to try out. In 2008, her singing coach encouraged her to audition and she did so, as a final tribute to her mother.

Susan’s audition was heard around the world. Her humble appearance was a stark contrast to the beautiful singing voice. She stunned the judges as well as the audience. Even though she did not win the show, the clip of her song became a sensation on YouTube. Her singing career took off and she became the first British female artist to have a number one album in Britain and the U.S. simultaneously. She has sold over 14 million albums to date. She attributes her success to her mother, saying, “She has had a word with someone upstairs, because I wouldn’t have had this otherwise.” [2]

Susan has always believed that the label of “brain damage” is unfair and knew there was something else going on. She decided to seek help and went to a specialist, who diagnosed her with Asperger’s syndrome. When talking about it, she stated, “I never know if people are genuine. I would say I have relationship difficulties, communicative difficulties, which lead to a lot of frustration. If people were a bit more patient, that would help.” [3]

She is determined, however, to reach her goals and keep singing. “Asperger’s doesn’t define me. It’s a condition that I have to live with and work through, but I feel more relaxed about myself. People will have a greater understanding of who I am and why I do the things I do.” [4]

Christmas Music: Susan Boyle Sings "Miracle Hymn" From Movie "The Christmas Candle"

From Denny:  The Christmas season is a time for reflection upon what we thought was the impossible to even dare to dream entering the realm of the possible and becoming our new reality.  We call that a miracle because it is so very rare!  If ever there was a story to illustrate the impossible becoming the possible it's the story of singer Susan Boyle's meteoric rise to fame.  She has recently been diagnosed with autism as an adult.  While it's been a rocky road for her she has been creating her life balance and is doing well.

Normally, I just cut to viewing the musical performance but this video has a long introduction from Joel Osteen's church, the largest in Texas.  It explains the story of how they came to write and produce the new movie, "The Christmas Candle."  What's interesting is that how Susan Boyle was on the same page with them spiritually - though the two sides had never met or spoke about the possibility of her involvement in the movie.  Take a listen as it is interesting to hear the story of how these movies develop via the Spirit of God drawing people to interact.  Susan's performance follows, so stay tuned!  Hope you enjoy a very Merry Christmas!

2nd Show, TV: Pastors Joel and Victoria Osteen welcome Susan Boyle to Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, for her biggest-ever live performance in the USA during two Sunday services (at 8:30and 11:00 am CST) today, November 17, 2013. Both services were live-streamed at www.joelosteen.com and rebroadcast on the Daystar Television Network three weeks later.

Boyle performed three songs, including "Miracle Hymn," an original composition from "The Christmas Candle" film, as well as "O Come, All Ye Faithful," her duet with Elvis Presley. Both tracks are on her upcoming album "Home for Christmas," releasing October 29.

Averaging 43,500 in weekly attendance, Lakewood is America's largest church and the first stop on Boyle's U.S. promo tour for her fifth album as well as her major motion picture debut in "The Christmas Candle," the first feature film based on a book by best-selling author, Max Lucado.

"Victoria and I, like all of America, fell in love with Susan Boyle the first time we saw her," Pastor Osteen said. "We are delighted and honored that she chose Lakewood Church for her first solo performance in this country."

Boyle said: "I am really looking forward to attending and performing at Lakewood. This will be the largest audience I have ever performed to in the USA and I am very excited. I'm also looking forward to my first trip to Texas. Many of my Texan fans have travelled around the globe for me so I am excited to be visiting their home state and singing in such a wonderful venue. It is also the first time I perform Miracle Hymn and O Come, All Ye Faithful to a live audience so it will be a very special moment."

Boyle gained worldwide attention with her appearance as a contestant on the TV program "Britain's Got Talent" in April 2009, singing "I Dreamed a Dream" from "LES MISERABLES." Susan has gone on to become a top selling artist with over 20 million albums sold worldwide, stormed to the top of the charts in over 30 countries, garnered two Grammy nominations and her four albums have gone multi-platinum in over 38 countries.

Adding to her myriad of talents, Boyle will appear in her first acting role with the release of "The Christmas Candle" next month. Boyle stars alongside Samantha Barks ("LES MISERABLES") as Eleanor Hopewell, wife of the churchwarden in the enchanting village of Gladbury. The inspirational family film, produced by ImpACT Productionsand Big Book Media, and distributed by EchoLight Studios, will release in the U.S. on Nov. 22.

Susan Boyle ~ In the Bleak Midwinter

1. In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
in the bleak midwinter, long ago.

2. Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain;
heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign.
In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
the Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.

3. Angels and archangels may have gathered there,
cherubim and seraphim thronged the air;
but his mother only, in her maiden bliss,
worshiped the beloved with a kiss.

4. What can I give him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
if I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
yet what I can I give him: give my heart.

Chat with Susan Boyle about life, fame & chasing dreams

/ 9 December 2013

From the depths of obscurity she’s become one of the most celebrated singers in the world. We chat with Susan Boyle ahead of her upcoming show in Abu Dhabi.

Ahead of her cancelled Abu Dhabi show, we chat with Susan Boyle about life after fame and chasing dreams

 EVERYBODY LOVES THE underdog, and Susan Boyle certainly seems to be their exalted poster child.
As she took to the stage to audition for Britain’s Got Talent, Boyle wasn’t thinking about fame and record contracts; she simply wanted to fulfill a promise to her dying mother that she would make something of her life. With more than 20 million albums sold and two Grammy nominations under her belt, that promise has unfolded with blinding speed.
But there’s more to her success than just a lovely singing voice. Her fans seem to be mesmerised by her modest nature and background - Boyle is a middle-aged woman with a thick Scottish accent who looks like she would do well as a librarian in a small country village. She seems like the most approachable person on the planet, a woman who has led the most ordinary of lives.
Boyle’s accolades are of course numerous, and the money she’s made off her four number one albums has undoubtedly ensured her financial security for a lifetime.
Yet she still lives in the same home she once shared with her family, in the same town she grew up in, surrounded by the same friends who always knew her as temperamental, but fiercely kind hearted and humble.
Abu Dhabi will mark a turning point in Boyle’s career - on December 13, she will perform her first full international concert here. Ahead of the show, Boyle spoke to City Times about her meteoric rise to fame, fears about the future and the power of dreaming.
 Your performance in Abu Dhabi will be one of your first major concerts. Has performing in front of thousands of fans become easier for you or do nerves still get the best of you sometimes?
I have always said nerves are good, it is what focuses you before the performance. If you didn’t get a little nervous then you would be giving a nonchalant performance, and that is no good. I think nerves are good, it means you want to do the best possible performance you can and it centres your attention to delivering.
Your voice has been described as “healing” but also “heartbreaking”. What do you think it is about your sound that touches so many people?
I’ve never really thought of my voice that way, to me I just sing. I think it may though have something to do with the song choices. I like to sing songs that I can emotionally connect to and really feel and understand the lyrics. If a song connects then I think you can do a far better performance and I guess that transcends into my voice.
You recorded a posthumous duet with Elvis, an honour that has only been bestowed upon a few artists. What did it feel like hearing your voices together on the Christmas track?
It was awesome. Technology really is a wonderful thing. I’m incredibly lucky to have the honour of performing a duet with Elvis - I’m the first British artist that has been afforded this duet for an album and it’s a wonderful feeling. Hearing the song for the first time was just magical. I felt as though Elvis was with me in a weird way when I was in the studio. From recording to the finished product, it was a wonderful experience. However the best thing to come from this duet is that we are releasing it in conjunction with Save the Children as a Christmas charity single and all proceeds will go to help children around the world.
Before auditioning for Britain’s Got Talent, you had spent a long time trying to make it in the industry. What kind of struggles did you face to actually land a spot on stage?
I had done a few local talent shows; I hadn’t spent years trying to crack the industry. What I did do was make a promise to my mother before she died that I would make something of my life. Little did I know back then just how much I would make of my life and just how Britain’s Got Talent turned my entire world around for the better.
Despite your enormous success, you’ve maintained your small-town roots. How important is it for you to stay close to home?
It’s very important for me to stay at home in Scotland. All my friends and family are here and it helps to keep me grounded.
Besides buying a new “Posh House” as you call it, you’ve made very few extravagant purchases. What is it that you value most?
I value my friends, family and fans. I value singing for people and making them happy. It has never been about fame and fortune for me, it’s always been about the singing. That’s it. I can make a difference with my voice. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to know that I can pay my bills but money is not the important part of this for me.
You’ve talked about every artist having an expiration date. Are you enjoying every minute of success or does the fear of it going away stay with you?
Every artist worries that this is going to end. I think it’s what drives us all to be bigger and better each year and strive to achieve more. Of course I still have that nagging doubt but it helps drive creativity, which keeps you current and successful. The Elvis duet is a case in point.
You’ve broken countless sales records since your debut, so how have you come to define success?
The reaction of my fans defines success for me. I love hearing feedback on what they think about the album, what songs they like and which they don’t. All feedback is so valuable for the next album.
Since gaining worldwide fame, how do you choose who to surround yourself with?
Exactly the same friends and family as before I went on to Britain’s Got Talent, and now I have my small team around me from management and label. But I have one of my oldest friends travel with me so it’s basically home from home.
People seem to connect with you on a level that most other performers will never enjoy. What has been the best part about your life after Britain’s Got Talent?
The best thing - well there are so many good things that have come from this. I’ve performed around the world, visited countries that I would never have expected to visit in my lifetime. Met wonderful new people and for the first time I don’t feel like an outsider looking in on life, I feel like I’m taking part now.

Baron-Cohen praises Susan Boyle for her "bravery" in revealing she has Asperger Syndrome

Written byADAM LUKE

The director of a pioneering Cambridge autism centre has praised singer Susan Boyle’s decision to reveal she has Asperger Syndrome.

Prof Simon Baron-Cohen said the Scot’s announcement will help improve understanding of the condition, and has called for more specialist clinics to be set up across the country.

At the weekend, Boyle, who shot to fame in 2009 on Britain’s Got Talent, spoke of her relief at the diagnosis after spending years believing she had suffered slight brain damage at birth.

Prof Baron-Cohen said: “I think it is brave of Susan Boyle to speak out like this, and I am sure her talking about the fact she has Asperger Syndrome will lead to greater awareness of the condition.

“It should provide inspiration and hope to others who also have a similar diagnosis that they can lead successful and fulfilling lives.”

Prof Baron-Cohen – cousin to actor Sacha Baron-Cohen – is director of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust’s (CPFT) Cambridge Lifespan Asperger Syndrome Service (CLASS) clinic, which has been providing specialist diagnostic assessments for adults who may have Asperger Syndrome or high-functioning autism for over 10 years.
It found a new home in September when a new building opened on the Fulbourn Hospital site, after the Autism Research Trust (ART) and National Autistic Society (NAS) received a grant from the N Sethia Foundation.

Prof Baron-Cohen added: “I am really proud of the achievements of the CLASS clinic in Cambridge and the partnership CPFT has with ART and NAS in our great new centre.
“The centre provides a vital resource for adults with an autism spectrum condition and their families.
“By being closely linked to autism research it also provides evidence-based standards of excellence in clinical practice.

“But there needs to be more clinics like it across the country so even more people can receive the help and support they need.”

Around one in 100 people in the UK have autism – this equates to just over 8,000 people in Cambridgeshire.
