In the old days, it was much easier for pop stars to keep up with how much they were getting paid. Somebody
would buy a CD at a Tower Records for $15 and a few dollars would appear months later on the star's royalty
sheet. Then iTunes took over the record business, and it was even easier (if not more profitable) – every time
somebody bought a 99-cent track, a few pennies went into the artist's bank account.
Those were such simple times. Today, music fans play free music videos on YouTube, stream songs for free
on Spotify, MOG or Rdio, customize Internet radio stations on Pandora or Slacker and consume music a
zillion different ways. The fractions of pennies artists make for each of these services are nearly impossible to
track – at least for now. "People like to simplify this and say, 'There's no money in it,'" says Jeff Price,
founder of TuneCore, which charges artists to place songs directly into iTunes, Spotify and others. "But it's
complex, it's complicated and it's still being worked out."
So you're Adele, the year's biggest pop star. Your songs stream on Spotify – or MOG, Rdio, Pandora orYouTube. You still sell downloads through iTunes and Amazon, and you still sell old-fashioned CDs in oldfashioned record stores. How much do you get paid?
Rolling Stone talked to several sources in the music business and got several different answers.

SAG-AFTRA National Board Will Consolidate To 25 Locals; Financial Update Kept Secret; 2 Unions’ Pension & Health Plans To Merge

LOS ANGELES (Oct. 28, 2012) – The National Board of Directors of SAG-AFTRA met in a scheduled two-day plenary this weekend at the Sheraton Universal Hotel in Los Angeles.
With the merger approved and the process of integrating operations of the two unions well under way, the board discussed the consolidation of locals nationwide. When the unions merged in March, every location in which either Screen Actors Guild or the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists had an office became a local of SAG-AFTRA. In streamlining the organization to best serve members, the original 33 locals were consolidated into 25.
The National Board unanimously voted to approve the following locals: Atlanta, Arizona-Utah, Chicago, Colorado, Dallas-Fort Worth, Hawaii, Houston-Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Michigan, Missouri-Kansas City-Nebraska, Nashville, Nevada, New England, New Orleans, New Mexico, New York, Ohio Allegheny, Philadelphia, Portland, San Diego, San Francisco-Northern California, Seattle, Twin Cities, Washington-Mid Atlantic.
When the union’s permanent governance structure is in place in September 2013, the number of national board seats allotted for the 25 locals will be 70. The two largest locals, Los Angeles and New York, will have 28 and 16 board members respectively. The 10 national officers also serve on the SAG-AFTRA national board bringing its total size to 80.
Members reviewed and approved nominations and elections policy recommendations for the new union, leading up to its first national convention in 2013.
Co-Presidents’ Report
Co-President Ken Howard opened the meeting and spoke of the work the union’s staff has undertaken since merger and recognized the many members he has met with in the last 6 months who have expressed their approval with the merger. He also read the honor roll of members who have passed away since the previous board meeting and led a moment of silence in their memory.
Co-President Roberta Reardon reported all national committee chairs and members have been selected. She also reported that the Commercials Negotiations Wages and Working Conditions process has concluded member meetings.
Later in the meeting, members received an additional update on the negotiations process from Assistant National Executive Director for Contracts and co-lead negotiator for the commercials agreement, Ray Rodriguez. Rodriguez recommended, and the board approved, adding an additional seven alternates to the W&W Plenary Committee and Commercials Negotiating Committee. The addition of 7 alternates brings the committee total to 17 members and 16 alternates including the national chair, three vice chairs and a local and regional codes liaison. The W&W Plenary at which the recommended proposals will be reviewed and adopted is scheduled to take place on Nov. 17 and 18 in Los Angeles.
National Executive Director’s Report
National Executive Director David White updated the board on the union’s operations including a report on the already announced voluntary severance program. White’s report included an overview of SAG-AFTRA’s music-related jurisdiction, including our Sound Recordings Agreement and other contracts, presented by Randall Himes, Assistant National Executive Director for Sound Recordings.
Executive Vice President’s Report
National Executive Vice President Ned Vaughn reported to the board on the union’s continued relationship with the USO and planned events coming up for Veteran’s Day and the holiday season. Vaughn urged members to participate in troop support activities held at their locals.
Co-Secretary Treasurers’ Report
The reports Co-Secretary Treasurers Amy Aquino and Matt Kimbrough provided an update on the union’s financials and reviewed the first quarter results.
General Counsel’s Report
Members also received the regularly scheduled report from legal counsel including a report on the SAG-AFTRA foreign royalties program. Chief Administrative Officer and General Counsel Duncan Crabtree-Ireland reported that the union has distributed $14.59 million to members that if uncollected, would have been lost to members forever.
Executive Committee Report
The Board received a report on the Local Assignment of SAG-AFTRA members as well as the Member Category designation for each member. In accordance with the principles set forth in the SAG-AFTRA Merger Agreement, members have been assigned to Locals based on a roster of zip code assignments. Local assignment may affect a member’s eligibility to run and serve as a member of the National Board or Local Board and Convention Delegate from the member’s local area in future elections
The recently distributed November dues bill includes a check box for members to self-select their member category from among the listed choices. In accordance with the SAG-AFTRA Constitution, to be eligible to serve as a category National Vice President a member must have been declared a member of that category for the twelve (12) months prior to the date of his or her nomination. Similar requirements may exist for other elected category representative positions if provided for in the applicable local constitution. Declarations that are made no later than December 31, 2012, will be deemed to be retroactive to the inception date of SAG-AFTRA. This selection has no impact on a member’s ability to work under any SAG-AFTRA agreement and will only be used internally for union elections and governance purposes.
Pension, Health & Retirement Report
The Board received a report on the progress of reciprocity and/or merger of the SAG-Producers Pension & Health Plans and the AFTRA Health & Retirement Plans. The trustees of both organizations, which are separate from the union, have initiated formal communications regarding the issue of reciprocity and, ultimately merger between the plans, and discussions are progressing between the two organizations.
The meeting was recessed on Saturday, October 27, in memory of recording artist Louis Nunley, who recently passed away.
The meeting adjourned at 12:25 p.m. October 28.

TRACKLIST

1. "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", made famous by Judy Garland in the musical Wizard of Oz. The song its self is about wishing and dreaming. It’s an apt song for me. Dreams can come true, depending on how hard you wish.

2. "The Winner Takes It All", this to me symbolises a relationship that has ended, it reminds me of a relationship I once had and this made me tearful when I had to sing it.

3. "Send In The Clowns", this is a very reflective and emotive song. I hope you like my version, it’s quite chilling.

4. "The Music Of The Night" featuring Michael Crawford, this is from Phantom of The Opera, so who better to accompany me than the Phantom himself! I found this awesome to perform.

5. "Bring Him Home", this moving piece is taken from Les Mis and to me represents a parents bond.

6. "Memory", straight from the musical Cats which was first performed by Elaine Paige. I was honoured to do a duet with Elaine on a TV special in 2009. It’s a great song to sing and based on the poetry of T.S Elliot

7. "As Long As He Needs Me", a classic piece from Oliver. A very insightful piece and rather emotional.

8. "All I Ask Of You", who would have thought that I would have been singing a duet with my hero Donny Osmond. I grew up with the Osmonds- especially Donny. I was thrilled.

9. "Out Here On My Own", this song is about somebody who wants to belong or fit it. This song brought my childhood back, it was a hard song to do as it reminded me of desperately wanting to fit in.

10. "You’ll Never Walk Alone", this is from Carousel. I’ve always associated this song with football and only a few weeks ago performed it at Celtic Park.

11. "This Is The Moment" featuring Donny Osmond, I really enjoyed performing this with Donny. I still can’t take it in. He was awesome.

Personal Message from Susan

18th September 2012
Personal Message from Susan
Hello,
Well it’s been a very exciting and busy few weeks but first I want to say sorry for not keeping you all up to date more regularly.
I have just returned from a girls holiday in Benidorm which was great fun. Our holiday motto became, ‘What happens in Benidorm, Stays in Benidorm!’
It was a really great holiday with two of my closest friends. It was lovely to have some hot sun and be able to just relax by a pool, read books or visit the spa for some beauty treatments. We were staying in a very posh hotel in Benidorm (yes they exsist!) and we were thoroughly spoilt by the wonderful staff. I managed to get a wee tan from the sun so I was happy with that. Our scottish skin isn’t the best when it comes to going brown!
There was lots of laughter and I have some great memories. I had a ball and really enjoyed every moment. I’ve booked another little break in January so I can have a little winter sun.
As well as Benidorm I have had a few visits to Stobo Castle, I recently went with my sister in law and had a great time. Again, it’s lovely to just take a couple of days away and have a bit of pampering. The hotel and the grounds are just beautiful and although close to home you feel like you are in another world.
I’ve become a real fan of the theatre again. Especially now I’m a patron of the local Bathgate Regal Theatre.
I went up to Dundee on Saturday to watch a production called ‘Mill Lavvies’. That was an enjoyable evening and I also went to watch the local Bathgate showcase at the Regal a couple of weeks ago. There is so much untapped talent in West Lothian and it’s good to watch and support them. There was lots of speculation about what I was going to be doing there, but I just like sitting in the theatre and watching the performances without any fuss and to cheer people on.
It hasn’t all been a holiday! I have been busy at work as well.
The album recording is now finished. I had the opportunity to listen to some of the music today and I was really happy and excited by the songs I heard. It’s been a great experience recording this album and working with a new producer, in a new studio was also an exciting step.
Personally, I can’t believe that I’ve just made my fourth album. Where has the time gone? It’s flown by. I think if you’d said to me at the beginning of 2009 that by the end of 2012 I would have my fourth album coming out around the globe I would have said you were pulling my leg! I hope you all enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it. This one has been a lot of fun to do.
As well as finishing recording I have also done a couple of photo shoots for the album and it’s great to be back in the swing of it again.
I’m looking forward to getting back on the road so to speak and visiting America. That feels like a second home to me, so being welcomed back with open arms, I can’t wait. I’m also planning on visiting some other places this year, so hopefully I will see more of you all.
I’m not going to give too much away at this point in terms of the album. Somethings need to be kept as surprises, but it won’t be too much longer before you find out more. However what I will say is watch this space…. It’s an exciting few months ahead and I can’t wait for you all to share this time with me.

The message below came from a radio station in San Antonio.  It is too bad Sony/Syco don't help promote Susan's CDs by getting a promotional copy to them.  She has made a lot of money for them.  I would hope they pay back.

I can understand why Sony has lost revenue.  This article mentions the figures and that customers are not happy with the service received from them.  I believe the reason why there is such a drop in revenue, is because they do not back up their stars, such as Susan Boyle.  There is no mention of her in this article even though over a million of her last CD "Someone To Watch Over Me" has been sold world-wide.  They do not publicize her music in the USA, even though there is a tremendous amount of interest in her. They do not see that her music is played on radio, even when fans request it over and over again.  They do not put out what people want to buy, like all the songs and shows she has done so far.  They do not answer calls and emails to them about their stars.  I never got an actual voice when I called NY Sony about radio play for Susan and I never got a reply to my messages and emails, which I sent to them about radio play. I never got a reply to all the messages I posted on their Media Director's Facebook.   I received no customer service what so ever.  A giant company like Sony, should be able to get their stars music played on USA radio, IMO.

Crown Media Q2 Revenues Up As Hallmark Channel Ad Sales Improve

Crown Media Q2 Revenues Up As Hallmark Channel Ad Sales Improve:
The owner of the Hallmark Channel says that its original movies are still working — and advertisers like the network’s daytime programming plans which include a two-hour daily show Home And Family and Marie Osmond’s Marie. Crown generated net income of $13.5M, – 38% vs the period last year, on revenues of $86.7M, +13.9%. Much of the decline in earnings is due to interest and tax expenses, partly due to its debt restructuring. For common stockholders, earnings per share increased a penny to four cents. The company is thinly traded and not closely followed by analysts. Crown says that ad sales were up 15% in Q2 to $66.5M, which it attributes to the growth in its audience. Subscriber fees from pay TV providers were up 10% to $19.9M. Crown says that that advertiser CPMs for Home And Familywhich will feature former Entertainment Tonight host Mark Steines and TV personality Paige Davis — were as much as 100% better than what Hallmark had been collecting for its off-network daytime shows. It also says that Marie is attracting first-time advertisers including KitchenAir, Electrolux, Visa, and General Motors. “During second quarter, the casting developments for Hallmark Channel were significant,” says Crown Media Family Networks CEO Bill Abbott. Although Crown shares closed yesterday at a modest $1.73, the price is up nearly 43% in 2012, recovering somewhat from a steep decline in 2011.

Lawmakers Ponder: Are Big Media Companies Too Powerful?

That wasn’t the precise topic of the Senate Commerce Committee hearing today. (It had the boring title: “The Cable Act at 20.”) But the question — as well as ones about whether the federal government over-regulates media — bubbled underneath the discussion of problems including higher-than-inflation annual pay TV price hikes, and contract disputes that sometimes result in blackouts of consumers’ favorite channels. Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller (D-W Va.) says that there’s too little competition in a system where pay TV customers “are still forced to pick larger and larger packages of channels no matter how few they watch.” His view resonated with Colleen Abdoulah, a witness who chairs the American Cable Association which primarily represents small and mid-sized cable operators. She says that broadcasters make “crazy payments for sports (rights) because they can be forced onto consumers…This abuse of power should be outlawed.” Mark Cooper of the Consumers Federation of America also called for changes that would enable pay TV customers to just buy the channels they want. “The only way to break the market power (of major networks and programmers) is to ensure consumers have choices.”
The discussion kept returning to retransmission consent agreements and disputes, one of the lasting legacies of the ’92 Act. Time Warner Cable’s Melinda Witner told lawmakers that it’s time to change some of the rules. They’ve resulted in “significant and ongoing consumer harm,” she says. In the first half of 2012 there’ve been 69 blackouts, +39% over all of last year, and “we can expect blackouts to increase in the future.” Broadcasters not only demand that distributors pay for programming that’s delivered over the air for free, she says, they insist that cable and satellite distributors carry channels that they don’t want. That results in “bloated packages and higher costs to consumers.” Since the major networks are must-have services, it’s “the opposite of a free market.”
But broadcasters countered that the current system is working. “Bad weather is a far greater source of consumer disruption” than retransmission consent disputes, CBS’ Martin Franks said. National Association of Broadcasters chief Gordon Smith noted that 75% of the blackouts this year involved just three companies: Time Warner Cable, Dish Network, and DirecTV. He’s not opposed to changes, though. He wants pay TV companies to notify subscribers well in advance when a potential disruption is coming, make it easier to switch services, and he wants them to provide refunds to customers for the days when they go without channels for which they’ve paid. Franks noted that changes in the law could create problems for CBS, which spends $5.5B a year for programming. “We need to be able to plan. And we know how this system works….I guess we prefer the devil we know.”
