Slice of Life

What would you do if you were brave?

By Salvatore Sapienza
Posted May 30, 2013 @ 04:29 PM

This week began with the celebration of Memorial Day, our annual remembrance of the courageous men and women who died while serving our country. Courage, however, is not only shown on the battlefield.
I think of courage when I remember the story of the singer, Susan Boyle, who bravely walked on stage for the first time a few years’ ago to audition for a television talent competition in England.
Despite her fears and the snears of the judges, Boyle, a grey-haired, middle-aged woman who hardly looked like your typical pop star, wowed the initially skeptical audience with her amazing rendition of “I Dreamed A Dream.” Since then, she has gone on to sell millions of records and perform around the world.
Often times, Boyle hears “Bravo!” at the end of her concerts. The word bravo comes from the same root word as the word brave, so when we cheer it, we are actually applauding the performer for their bravery, for being vulnerable enough to sing the song of the heart.
The word courage comes from the Latin word for heart, so when we act courageously or encourage one another, we are acting from the core of our hearts.
I think, too, of courage when I think of Jason Collins, the basketball player who last month became the first openly gay male athlete in U.S. major pro sports history. President Obama reached out by phone to Collins, telling him he was impressed by his courage.
So, today, I’d like you to ask yourself: What step would you take today if you were brave? What’s keeping you from singing your heart’s song or living life more authentically? Could it be fear of what others might think of you?
Remember the Cowardly Lion from “The Wizard of Oz?” He thought that because he was king of the jungle that he shouldn’t have any fears, but he did, so he went to see the Wizard to ask for courage. What he discovered is that you can’t have courage unless you’re afraid.
Mark Twain wrote, “Courage is not the absence of fear. It is the mastery of fear,” and Elenor Roosevelt famously proclaimed, “You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”
I think it’s very interesting how similar the words scared and sacred are to one another. Maybe it’s only in those moments when we face our fears that we become more of who we were created to be, more whole or holy.
So, the next time fear is breathing down your neck, keeping you from experiencing more of life’s greatness, remember the words of the brave movie cowboy, John Wayne, who said, “Courage is being scared to death ... and saddling up anyway.”

Singing sensation Susan Boyle has not ruled out playing a gig in West Lothian in the future.
The Blackburn superstar is busy rehearsing for a seven date tour of Scotland which will start in Inverness on July 2.
SuBo, who shot to fame after claiming second place in television talent show Britain’s Got Talent in 2009, says she is more than ready to begin her first ever tour.
But despite missing out West Lothian this time round, the 52-year-old, speaking on a visit to the Five Sisters Zoo, told the Courier it would be something she would consider in the future.
“I’ve nothing planned for West Lothian at the moment. But I would never rule anything out,” Susan said.
“It would be great to play to my fans, family and friends in West Lothian. It’s definitely something I will like to do and I will be thinking about venues.”
Susan said it was performing with Donny Osmond earlier this year that inspired her to set dates for a live Scottish tour.
The 52-year-old said: “I feel I’m in the zone and ready for it. In fact, I’m more than ready.
“It’s very important to be accepted in your own homeland though, and I do feel accepted in my homeland. I’m definitely doing the tour, there’s no maybes about it.
“I sang with Donny Osmond in March this year and it was around that time I started to think I was ready and made my mind up to do more live work. I got a real taste for it.
“It all feels a bit surreal but I can get used to anything.
“I feel I’m ready enough now and I want to share it all with other people.”
SuBo will play the Eden Court Theatre, Inverness, on Tuesday, July 2; Music Hall, Aberdeen, July 4; Caird Hall, Dundee, July 6; King’s Theatre, Glasgow, July 8 and 9; Edinburgh Festival Theatre, July 12 and 13.

Britain’s Got Talent 2013: Susan Boyle advises this year’s finalists, “Don’t let your nerves get the better of you!”

June 2nd, 2013 by TV Writer Lynn.

Former Britain’s Got Talent finalist Susan Boyle, who has of course gone on to enjoy a hugely successful career since her time on the show, has offered some advice to this year’s BGT finalists…
And one of the things Susan advised the hopefuls was to try to avoid allowing their nerves to get the better of them.
She made her remarks while speaking to OK! magazine, and began by saying, “Enjoy every single moment…

“Try not to let the nerves get the better of you, get plenty of rest, practise your act so it’s the best it can be and enjoy it.
“You never know what might happen, I’m living proof of that!”
However, Susan also cautioned that irrespective of how well things go after BGT, wannabes should always be aware they may well have a shelf-life.
She explained, “[Life] has changed for the better without a shadow of a doubt…

“Sometimes I still have to pinch myself that all of this has happened and in such a short space of time.
“The problem is, and I think many people in my industry can understand this, because everything happened so rapidly, you worry that it will go just as quickly and I don’t want my life now to end.”
52 year old Susan concluded by saying, “I love singing and performing to fans.”
Here’s a reminder of the moment that Susan first came to the world’s attention on BGT…

Susan Boyle gives music tips

Susan Boyle
Susan Boyle has advised up-and-coming stars not to succumb to nerves.
The star shot to fame when she wowed on TV show Britain's Got Talent and eventually bagged second place.
Susan has some words of wisdom for those hoping to follow in her footsteps by taking part in a talent show.
"Enjoy every single moment," she shared when the UK edition of OK! asked what she would tell those with their hearts set on making it in the industry.
"Try not to let the nerves get the better of you, get plenty of rest, practise your act so it's the best it can be and enjoy it. You never know what might happen, I'm living proof of that!"
Since her Britain's Got Talent success, Susan has gone on to perform all over the world and meet stars such as Oprah Winfrey and Donny Osmond.
The 52-year-old still worries her fame could go as quickly as it came.
"[Life] has changed for the better without a shadow of a doubt," she gushed.
"Sometimes I still have to pinch myself that all of this has happened and in such a short space of time. The problem is, and I think many people in my industry can understand this, because everything happened so rapidly, you worry that it will go just as quickly and I don't want my life now to end. I love singing and performing to fans."
